September 2, 1997 PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS IN NEW FCC CHILDREN'S TELEVISION RULES GO INTO EFFECT On Monday, September 1, 1997, the FCC's new rules on Children's Television went into effect. These new rules guarantee at least three hours of educational TV every week from every TV station. "Last August, in a historic move, the FCC adopted clear and concrete rules to encourage the development and promotion of TV programming that would be welcomed by parents and desired by children," stated FCC Chairman Reed Hundt. "Starting this week, families everywhere will have a chance to view, first hand, the new and enticing educational/informational shows designed specifically for children." "I am very pleased that parents and kids will have new choices," said Hundt. "My family is looking forward, in particular to viewing new shows like ABC's Science Court, which I just watched and enjoyed today. In the end, the country and broadcasters will be well-served if parents and teachers evaluate and respond to these new shows in new and ample ways."
