THE FCC & FTC TO MAKE POLICY ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING
TRUTH-IN-ADVERTISING OF LONG DISTANCE SERVICES
WHAT:
The FCC and FTC will hold a news conference regarding
``Truth-in-Advertising'' of long distance services.
WHEN:
Wednesday, March 1, at 9:30am
WHERE:
Federal Communications Commission
445 12th Street, SW, Washington, D.C.
COMMISSION MEETING ROOM
WHO:
- WILLIAM KENNARD, CHAIRMAN OF THE FCC
- Robert Pitofsky, Chairman of the FTC
BACKGROUND:
Consumers have reported being confused and often misled by the claims made by
companies marketing long distance services. New services, including ``10 10''
numbers and discount calling plans, are heavily promoted in prime time TV
commercials, in national newspaper and magazine campaigns, and through major
direct mail promotions. Next week's news conference follows a joint forum held
by the two Commissions last November to discuss how these long distance
services are advertised and marketed.
