FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Rick Chessen at December 1, 1999 202/418-2300 STATEMENT BY COMMISSIONER GLORIA TRISTANI ON HER DECISION TO REMAIN AT THE FCC Washington, DC -- Over the past months, I have given serious thought to returning to my home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to run for Congress. I viewed the U.S. Congress as an opportunity to serve the people of New Mexico every day. However, the Administration has asked me to stay at the FCC and I will. I intend to continue to work on the issues about which I am passionate making sure that all New Mexicans and all Americans have access to the Internet, that every child has the tools they need to compete in the next century, that all Americans, and especially minorities, Native Americans, those living in rural communities and Americans with disabilities, have the opportunity to benefit from the communications revolution. I also want to protect our children from sex and violence in the media by educating parents about the v-chip and to ensure that the media reflect the cultural diversity of America and the markets they serve. I very much look forward to a time in the future when I can return to my state and serve the people of New Mexico in a different capacity. - FCC -
