                STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

     I am very pleased that Gloria Tristani will continue to serve as a Commissioner at the Federal
Communications Commission. I count Gloria as a friend and a valuable member of this
administration. 

     She has played an integral role in our success in expanding access to the Internet to children all
across America. The people of New Mexico should know that they have a daughter who not only
serves their state well, but the people of this entire country.

     Given her love of her home state and her dedication to public service, I know that her decision
not to run for Congress was a difficult one. But I am confident that in the future, Gloria -- in
whatever path she elects to pursue   will be a dedicated and effective leader for the people of
New Mexico.
