REMARKS BY COMMISSIONER JAMES H. QUELLO ON THE OCCASION OF HIS INDUCTION INTO THE RADIO HALL OF FAME -CHICAGO CULTURAL CENTER OCTOBER 27, 1996 Heartfelt thanks for this most prestigious and memorable of what I humorously call my pre-posthumous awards. As a fugitive from the actuarial law of averages, I especially appreciate receiving this distinctive honor while I am here to enjoy it and enjoy the company of my fellow radio broadcasters. Recently I have credited my awards with the distinction of surviving to an advanced age. When you survive the transition from the "golden years" to the very senior "platinum years," you are considered venerable. With venerability you are credited with virtues you never had and I'm grateful. Speaking before a radio-oriented audience is a welcome homecoming for me. As most of you know, radio was my principal pre-FCC career. I spent 27 exciting years in every aspect of radio. Also, my wife, Mary, remains exceedingly loyal to broadcasting. Several years ago when called upon to say a few words at a formal Washington, DC dinner attended by many government and FCC officials, she frankly blurted out: "I was much happier and more fulfilled being a broadcaster's wife than a Commissioner's wife." I yelled back, "Mary, I was much younger then." So, thanks again for adding such a meaningful award and memorable honor to my lifetime pleasant experiences. My final word: I'd like my FCC legacy to read, "He never forgot where he came from." ###
