September 29, 1999 STATEMENT OF FCC CHAIRMAN WILLIAM KENNARD REGARDING BELL ATLANTIC'S 271 FILING IN NEW YORK As FCC Chairman, my continuing goal is to ensure that local phone markets are open, so consumers can reap the benefits of real competition that enables them to pick the best deal. I look forward to the day when a Bell company is able to demonstrate that it has met the test of opening up its local market as a condition to being able to offer long distance service in its market. I applaud the New York Public Service Commission for its work on Bell Atlantic's application to enter the long distance market. The dedication and expertise displayed by New York's Public Service Commission and its staff are truly impressive. We share the same commitment to increased local competition. I will be evaluating the Bell Atlantic application with great interest, and look forward to hearing the views of all interested parties. - FCC -
