DA 99-1010

DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL JUNE 28, 1999 FOR COMMENTS
ON OVERCOMING OBSTACLES TO TELEPHONE SERVICE FOR
INDIANS ON RESERVATIONS
BO DOCKET NO. 99-11

Released: May 27, 1999

NEW COMMENT PERIOD CLOSES: JUNE 28, 1999

The Federal Communications Commission has held two hearings on the subject of overcoming obstacles to telephone service to Indians on reservations. The first was held on January 29, 1999, at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The second was held on March 23, 1999, at the Sprung Facility in the Gila River Indian Community in Chandler, Arizona. This Public Notice extends the period for filing written comments concerning obstacles to telephone service for Indians on reservations.

A Public Notice released on March 2, 1999, announcing the Arizona hearing, invited written comments from all interested parties, and requested that those comments be filed in BO Docket 99-11 on or before May 28, 1999.

This Public Notice extends the period for filing to June 28, 1999. This extension is justified for two reasons. First, members of the Native American community have requested an extension. Second, the extension facilitates the development of as complete a factual record as possible.

New Mexico and Arizona hearing transcripts, and all new and additional materials submitted during the extended comment period, may be found on line, under the heading "Opportunity and Community Access", on the FCC World Wide Web homepage at www.fcc.gov. In addition, transcripts of the testimony given at the hearings, and written statements and comments submitted in both hearings are available for inspection and duplication at the FCC Reference Center. Accordingly, interested parties are advised to contact the FCC Reference Center at (202) 418-0270. Copies of specific documents may be ordered from the International Transcript Service ("ITS"), which is located at 1231 20th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036. The telephone number of ITS is (202) 357-3800. Its fax number is (202) 357-3805.

New and additional written comments and other statements should be filed in BO Docket No. 99-11 on or before June 28, 1999, and should reference both the DA number and the docket number designated above. All comments and other materials should be filed with the Office of the Secretary, Federal Communications Commission, Portals Building, 445 12th Street, S.W. Washington, D.C. 20554.
