CHAIRMAN POWELL NAMES MARSHA MACBRIDE AS FCC CHIEF OF STAFF;
ALSO ANNOUNCES TRANSITION AND PERSONAL STAFF

Washington, DC -- Michael K. Powell, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, today announced that he will appoint Marsha J. MacBride as the agency's Chief of Staff.

He also announced a core FCC transition team and his personal staff.

Ms. MacBride will return to the Commission after having recently served as a Vice President in the Washington, D.C., office of The Walt Disney Company. Nearly a ten-year FCC veteran, Ms. MacBride previously held the positions of Legal Advisor to then-Commissioner Powell for mass media and cable television matters and Executive Director of the FCC's Task Force on Year 2000 Conversion.

"I am incredibly pleased that Marsha has agreed to come back to public service at the Commission," Chairman Powell remarked. "Her prior experience with me as a Legal Advisor and, most importantly, as Executive Director of the FCC's Year 2000 Task Force, showed what a valuable asset Marsha is to this agency. As Chief of Staff, she will be exercising her wonderful management and people skills that were so instrumental in our successful Y2K effort."

Ms. MacBride joined the Commission in 1991 as an attorney in the Political Programming Branch of the Mass Media Bureau's Enforcement Division, and has subsequently served as an Acting Deputy Chief of the Cable Services Bureau, Senior Legal Advisor to the Chief, Mass Media Bureau, and Associate Chief in the Office of Engineering and Technology. From December 1996 to November 1997, Ms. MacBride was Legal Advisor to Commissioner James H. Quello.

Ms. MacBride is a 1981 graduate of Douglass College, Rutgers University, where she received, with magna cum laude distinction, a B.A. degree. In 1985, she earned her law degree from the George Washington University School of Law in Washington, D.C.

In order to facilitate a smooth transition, Chairman Powell also has designated a core transition team of FCC officials that will be responsible, in the interim, for the agency's legal, media relations and legislative and inter-governmental functions. The transition team will coordinate its collective activities and efforts with the new Chief of Staff and the Chairman's personal staff.

Jane E. Mago, a Deputy Bureau Chief of the FCC's Enforcement Bureau, will be principally responsible for the interim management of the agency's legal functions, overseeing the Office of General Counsel.

David H. Fiske, a Deputy Director of the FCC's Office of Media Relations, will be principally responsible for the interim management of the agency's media relations functions, overseeing the Office of Media Relations.

Paul A. Jackson, Special Assistant to the Chairman, will be principally responsible for the interim management of the agency's legislative and inter-governmental functions, overseeing the FCC's Office of Legislative and Inter-governmental Affairs.

The Chairman also announced that his current personal staff, including Mr. Jackson, will move to the Chairman's Office.

Peter A. Tenhula will serve as Senior Legal Advisor to the Chairman, and is responsible for wireless and international issues.

Kyle D. Dixon and Susan M. Eid will also continue to serve Chairman Powell as Legal Advisors. Mr. Dixon is principally responsible for common carrier issues as well as selected broadband and advanced telecommunications issues. Ms. Eid is principally responsible for mass media and cable television issues.

Antonia ("Toni") McGowan will continue as the Chairman's Confidential Assistant and Dorothy Clingman will move to the Chairman's office as Senior Staff Assistant.

Biographies of these personal staff members are available on Chairman Powell's Internet site via the World Wide Web at http://www.fcc.gov/commissioners/powell.

Additional staff personnel appointed to the Chairman's Office include: Thomasine ("Tommi") Greely, Administrative Officer; Betty Freeman, Special Assistant to the Senior Legal Advisor; and Kim Anderson-Collins, Staff Assistant.
