         HAROLD W. FURCHTGOTT-ROTH SWORN IN AS FCC COMMISSIONER
                                    
     Harold W. Furchtgott-Roth was sworn in today as a member of the Federal
Communications Commission. 

     Commissioner Furchtgott-Roth, a Republican, takes over the seat previously occupied
by Andrew C. Barrett.  His term ends June 30, 2000.   

     Before coming to the FCC, Furchtgott-Roth was Chief Economist for the House
Committee on Commerce, which has jurisdiction over federal laws governing
telecommunications.  He was a Senior Economist for Economists Incorporated from 1988-
1995, where he provided economic analysis for litigation and regulatory proceedings.  Before
this, he served as Research Analyst for the Center for Naval Analyses.  

     He is a member of the American Economics Association and the Econometrics
Society and has written extensively on various topics in economics, including
telecommunications. 

     He holds an S.B. degree in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology and a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University.

     Furchtgott-Roth, his wife, Diana, and five children live in Bethesda, MD.
