            Statement of FCC Chairman William E. Kennard 
              on Conditions for SBC-Ameritech Merger  
                                  
                                  
     FCC Chairman William E. Kennard today issued the following statement regarding conditions for
the SBC-Ameritech merger:  

     In accordance with the process outlined in my April 1 letter to the Chairmen of SBC and
Ameritech, the Common Carrier Bureau today held a forum to inform the public about the status of its
discussions with SBC and Ameritech over the past four weeks.  We are pleased that this process has
provided an opportunity for public input on these important questions. 

     Based on the reports I have received concerning the progress made over the past four weeks, I
have directed the staff to continue the discussions with the objective of rapidly concluding the
development of a set of conditions designed to address the public interest concerns.
