PUBLIC NOTICE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION 1919 M STREET, N.W. WASHINGTON, D.C. 20554 News media information 202/418-0500 Fax-On-Demand 202/418-2830 Internet: http://www.fcc.gov ftp.fcc.gov Released: October 2, 1997 COMMISSION EXCEEDS PRESIDENT'S GOAL TO ELIMINATE ONE-HALF OF ITS INTERNAL REGULATIONS The FCC announced today that it has eliminated 71 percent of its internal regulations, thereby exceeding by nearly 43 percent the President's goal of reducing internal regulations. Executive Order 12861, Elimination of One-Half of Executive Branch Internal Regulations, issued on September 11, 1993, directed government agencies to eliminate 50 percent of their internal management regulations that are not required by law. To meet this challenge, the FCC's Office of Managing Director established an Internal Regulations Task Force comprised of representatives from the major bureaus and offices. The task force identified 115 internal directives totalling 3,112 pages which it determined to be subject to the Executive Order. As of September 30, 1997, the Commission has eliminated a total of 89 directives and revised 15 others resulting in a reduction of 2,220 pages (71 percent of the pages existing at the time the Executive Order was issued). The elimination and revision of these internal management directives have made it possible for FCC employees to work more efficiently. The achievements of the Task Force over the past four years demonstrate the FCC's continuing support for being an agency that works better and costs less. Its task successfully completed, the Managing Director has disbanded the Internal Regulations Task Force effective October 1, 1997.
