Make-over to Improve Usability Through a More Consistent Site-wide Design

Washington, DC -- The FCC will launch the first phase of a major redesign of its web site (www.fcc.gov) on Monday, July 16, 2001. The goals of the redesign are to provide greater uniformity among all the sections and pages on the website and to make it easier for users to obtain FCC information.

The first phase on Monday will include the main FCC Home Page, Commissioners' pages, the Wireless Telecommunications, International, and Enforcement Bureau pages, the Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs page and FCC-wide topic pages. The remainder of the FCC web site will be switched to the new design in stages between now and the end of September. An expanded and improved general "search" function will also be added in these additional stages.

The redesign follows an extensive evaluation of the web site that considered comments from the public, information from interviews with industry stakeholders and interested public parties, and recommendations from independent usability experts. The study evaluated the consistency, usability, navigability, format, content, appropriateness, interactivity and effectiveness of the web site and made recommendations being implemented in the redesign for consistent formatting, fonts, colors and navigation.

This is the first major redesign of the site since June of 1999, and the second since its inception in 1996. Comments from users concerning the web site are encouraged and can be sent to webmaster@fcc.gov.
