TOM POWER, SENIOR LEGAL ADVISOR TO FCC CHAIRMAN KENNARD, JOINS FIBERLINK; KAREN EDWARDS ONYEIJE NAMED NEW LEGAL ADVISOR TO CHAIRMAN

Washington, DC--William E. Kennard, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission announced today that Tom Power will leave the Commission at the end of April to become General Counsel at Fiberlink, a Pennsylvania-based provider of virtual network connectivity. Karen Edwards Onyeije will replace Tom Power as the Chairman's legal advisor on mass media and cable policies.

Chairman Kennard said, "Tom will be missed at the Commission. He has been an invaluable member of my team. Tom is a witty wonk who has made policymaking as enjoyable as his friendship. We have worked together since the beginning of my tenure as Chairman."

Kennard commented, "I know that our loss is Fiberlink's gain. With Tom's experience in the cable and telecommunications industries, he brings a unique set of skills and knowledge that is ideal for the Broadband Internet Age."

Chairman Kennard also announced the appointment of Karen Edwards Onyeije as the new Legal Advisor to the Chairman. He noted, "Karen will hit the ground running. I met Karen when she was a critical member of Larry Irving's team in the Commerce Department. I considered it quite a coup when she came over to the Commission and I am pleased that she has agreed to join my personal staff."

Ms. Onyeije has served as Special Counsel in the Office of General Counsel since October 1999. In this capacity, Ms. Onyeije handled mass media and cable policies, including biennial review of the broadcast cross ownership rules, digital must carry, equal employment opportunity rules for broadcasters and multichannel video programming providers, and the Commission's merger review process. Before joining the Commission, Ms. Onyeije served as Senior Policy Advisor for Intergovernmental Affairs to the Assistant Secretary of Commerce, National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA).

Ms. Onyeije received an LL.M. from Georgetown University, a J.D. from the University of Southern California and a B.A. from Loma Linda University.
