NEWSReport No. MM-850 MASS MEDIA ACTION September 19, 1994 LICENSE FOR KSBW-TV, SALINAS, CA, RENEWED, SUBJECT TO EEO REPORTING CONDITIONS AND FORFEITURE The Commission has granted the application of KSBW License, Inc., for renewal of the license of KSBW-TV, Salinas, CA, subject to EEO reporting conditions. It also notified the licensee that it is apparently liable for a forfeiture of $15,000. The Commission denied a petition to deny the renewal filed by the California Conference of Branches of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the League of United Latin American Citizens. The Commission said it found no indication of discrimination in the station's employment practices. However, its review indicated that the licensee failed to contact minority specific sources for over one third of its vacancies and failed to maintain adequate records for meaningful self-assessment. Therefore the Commission conditioned the renewal on filing EEO reports throughout the license term and issued the liability notice for $15,000. Action by the Commission September 19, 1994, by Memorandum Opinion and Order and Notice of Apparent Liability (FCC 94-239). Chairman Hundt, Commissioners Barrett, Ness and Chong with Commissioner Quello concurring in the result. - FCC - News Media contact: Rosemary Kimball at (202) 418-0500.
