The FCC received over 700 applications from Alaska, California, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Mariana Islands, Maryland, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and Utah during the first filing window May 30-June 8. The order in which these groups states may file were selected by FCC lottery in March. The stations will be licensed exclusively to non-profit educational organizations or institutions to serve their local communities. The new LPFM service was authorized by the FCC in January, 2000. Applications for ten-watt LPFM stations that will serve areas with radii of approximately 1-2 miles, will be accepted after the bulk of the licensing of the 100-watt stations has been completed. Further information on the LPFM service, and about applying for a station is on the FCC's website at: www.fcc.gov/lpfm. -FCC
