LPFM is a new service established by the Commission on January 20, 2000 designed to serve local communities. An LPFM station will serve an area with a radius of approximately 3.5 miles, with a maximum power level of 100 watts. LPFM stations will be licensed to community-based nonprofit or governmental educational organizations or institutions or public safety radio entities. This new service means that millions of Americans - such as members of schools, churches, minority groups, public safety agencies, volunteer fire departments and other local community groups will now have a voice to serve their local communities. During this first round, applications will be accepted from Alaska, California, the District of Columbia, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, the Mariana Islands, Maryland, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and Utah. This group of states was selected as the first applicant group by a random lottery held on March 27.
