From: To: A16.A16(kidstv) Date: 9/8/95 11:22am Subject: Children's programs on commercial television To: Mr. Reid Hunt, Chairman, FCC Dear Mr. Hunt: I recently heard an interview you gave on Monitor Radio explaining your efforts to force commercial television networks to dedicate more time to children's programming of a worthwhile nature. I decided I would first ask my four children (who, due to their parents insistance and their own usual good sense watch only one or two programs regularly on commercial stations) how they would improve television programming for kids. "More cartoons!" my 10-year-old immediately replied. Oh well, it was a nice thought.... Still, as a parent I support whatever concessions you can wring from the entirely self-serving television networks in exchange for their priveleged access to public airwaves. If the networks continue to resist, perhaps you could find some way of forcing them to compensate the public for their lack of responsibility. For instance, instead of showing a few worthwhile children's programs, perhaps they could instead pay into the fund that supports the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Not really an adequate substitute, but better than nothing. I enjoyed your interview and hope your efforts are successful. David W. Jenkins pagat@aol.com
