On December 22, 1998, the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation (DoJ/FBI) submitted a motion to the Commission to extend by 14 days to January 27, 1999 the pleading deadline for reply comments to the Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in the above-captioned proceeding. In their motion, DoJ/FBI state that the Commission received comments on the Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking from more than 400 parties, and that most of those parties oppose the position enunciated by DoJ/FBI on several issues. DoJ/FBI contend that it would be extremely difficult to respond to all of the comments by January 13, 1999 in a manner that will provide adequate assistance to the Commission in its deliberations. 2. Although the Commission does not routinely grant extensions of time, we agree with DoJ/FBI that in this instance an extension of time would be in the public interest. The volume of comments is sufficiently large so as to render it infeasible for DoJ/FBI and other parties who may wish to submit detailed reply comments to do so by January 13, 1999. Accordingly, for good cause shown, IT IS ORDERED that the date for filing reply comments is extended to January 27, 1999. 3. This action is taken pursuant to authority found in Sections 4(i), 229(a), and 303 of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended, 47 U.S.C. 154(i), 229(a), and 303; and pursuant to Sections 0.31, 0.241, and 1.46 of the Commission's Rules, 47 C.F.R. 0.31, 0.241, and 1.46.
