On May 29, 1998, the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (DoJ/FBI) submitted a motion to the Commission in the above-captioned proceeding to extend by seven days to June 12, 1998 the pleading deadline for reply comments on petitions and issues regarding standards for assistance capability requirements. 2. On April 20, 1998, the Commission released a Public Notice in which it established a comment date of May 20, 1998 and a reply comment date of June 5, 1998 on these petitions and issues. In their motion, DoJ/FBI state that the Commission received comments totalling over 400 pages from more than 20 parties, and that almost all of these comments oppose the position of DoJ/FBI. DoJ/FBI contend that it would be extremely difficult to respond to these comments by June 5, 1998 in a way that will provide adequate assistance to the Commission in its deliberations. 3. Although the Commission does not routinely grant extensions of time, we agree with DoJ/FBI that in this instance an extension of time would be in the public interest. The volume of comments is sufficiently large so as to render it infeasible for DoJ/FBI and other parties who may wish to submit detailed reply comments to do so by June 5, 1998. Accordingly, for good cause shown, IT IS ORDERED that the date for filing reply comments is extended to June 12, 1998. 4. This action is taken pursuant to authority found in Sections 4 (i) and 303 of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended, 47 U.S.C. 154 (i) and 303; and pursuant to Sections 0.31, 0.241, and 1.46 of the Commission's Rules, 47 C.F.R. 0.31, 0.241 and 1.46.
