      COMMON CARRIER BUREAU GRANTS UNITED STATES TELEPHONE
   ASSOCIATION PETITION FOR EXTENSION OF TIME IN 1997 ANNUAL
                      ACCESS TARIFF FILINGS
                                
                       (CC DOCKET 97-149)

     On August 11, 1997, United States Telephone Association (USTA), filed a petition for
extension of time to file direct cases in the 1997 Annual Access Tariff proceeding and as required
by the Commission's Designation Order, released July 28, 1997.  

     The Competitive Pricing Division has granted USTA's petition to extend the filing date to
September 2, 1997.  Pleadings responding to the direct cases may be filed no later than September
17, 1997 and must be captioned "Oppositions to Direct Case" or Comments on Direct Case."  The
parties may each file a "Rebuttal" to oppositions or comments no later than September 24, 1997. 
The extension is applicable to all local exchange carriers subject to this tariff investigation.
