By the Deputy Chief, Common Carrier Bureau:


 1.  On August 7, 1998, the Commission released a Notice of Inquiry (NOI) in CC
Docket No. 98-146 to examine the deployment of advanced telecommunications capability.  The
NOI requires parties to file comments on or before September 8, 1998, and reply comments on
or before October 8, 1998.  On September 18, 1998, the Personal Communications Industry
Association ("PCIA") filed a Request for Extension of Time for filing reply comments to the
Commission's NOI.  

 2.  In its pleading, PCIA requests that the deadline for reply comments be extended until
October 29, 1998.  PCIA states that because many comments have been filed and in view of
the significance of this proceeding, it lacks enough time to thoroughly review the opening
comments and compile a meaningful reply.  PCIA further states that a grant of this extension
request would allow interested parties to file reply comments that will be more helpful to the
Commission in its evaluation of this proceeding.

 3.  We deny PCIA's request for an extension of the October 8, 1998, date for filing reply
comments.  Although the current pleading schedule is relatively compressed, we do not believe
we can extend the filing date for reply comments without compromising the Commission's
ability to meet the implementation schedule mandated by Congress.  

 4.  Accordingly, IT IS ORDERED that the Request for Extension of Time filed by the
Personal Communications Industry Association is DENIED.
