July 17, 1995 JOHN MULETA APPOINTED CHIEF OF COMMON CARRIER BUREAU'S ENFORCEMENT DIVISION John B. Muleta has been appointed by the Commission to serve as Chief of the Common Carrier Bureau's Enforcement Division. The Enforcement Division is responsible for developing and implementing the Bureau's consumer protection programs as well as conducting the Bureau's investigations into possible violations of the Communications Act. The Division's Informal Complaints and Public Inquiries Branch serves as the primary contact point within the Bureau for consumers. The Formal Complaints and Investigations Branch administers and processes formal complaints against common carriers and also reviews industry mergers and acquisitions involving common carriers as required by the Communications Act. Mr. Muleta joined the Commission in 1994 as a member of the Office of Plans and Policy. His work there has involved dealing with the diverse set of long- range strategic issues facing the Commission including telecommunications competition and the adoption of advanced television standards. Mr. Muleta was previously with the Washington, D.C. office of Coopers & Lybrand's Information/Communications Consulting Group. Mr. Muleta has an undergraduate degree in Systems Engineering, an MBA and a J.D., all from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Mr. Muleta received the 1990 Shermet Award for Academic Excellence from the faculty of the Colgate Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia. Mr. Muleta resides in Arlington, VA with his wife Carol. - FCC -
